The 5 Days Nyiragongo Hike and Gorilla Trekking in Congo is a magical journey into the isolated jungles of one of the oldest National parks in Africa the Virunga National Park where you should expect an experience like no other. On this tour, you will trek mountain gorillas in Virunga National park and then hike the Nyiragongo Volcano in Congo one of the most active volcanoes in the world standing over 11000 meters above sea level

Itinerary Summary

Day 1: Drive from Kigali to Gisenyi Lake Kivu.

Day 2: Hiking Nyiragongo Volcano.

Day 3: Descend back from the summit and transfer to Mikeno Lodge for overnight.

Day 4: Gorilla tracking in virunga national park.

Day 5: Transfer back to Kigali for city tour and later to Kigali international airport for your flight out.

Travel Days

DAY 01: Pick up from Kigali and Transfer to Gisenyi Lake Kivu

Our trained guide/driver will pick you from the hotel or Airport in Kigali and brief you about the trip. He will drive towards Gisenyi via Ruhengeri and will make the first stop over at cultural centre in Ibiwachu village found in Ruhengeri. Upon reaching Gisenyi, you will do a boat cruise on Lake Kivu (optional). Overnights can be taken from either water front resort lodge or Lake Kivu Serena hotel.

DAY 02: Nyiragongo volcano hiking to the summit

The driver will pick you from the hotel which is in Gisenyi town very early in the morning. He will drive through Goma town to Virunga national park headquarters for briefing and you will be given a well knowledgeable guide. You will set off with hiking at 10:30am if you use kibati starting point, it take around 5 hours to reach the summit of Nyiragongo Mountain. Upon arrival at the summit, you will enjoy the spectacular views of the burning volcano and later have dinner and accommodation at the mountain camp tents.

DAY 03: Descend the Nyiragongo Volcano and Departure to Mikeno Lodge at Rumangabo

Have breakfast and after descend down from Nyiragongo volcano mountain, you will meet the driver and drive to Mikeno Lodge at Rumangabo, close to Virunga National park.

Overnight: Mikeno Lodge.

DAY 04: Gorilla trekking in Virunga National Park-Congo

After your early morning breakfast, your guide will drive you to the Park Headquarters for briefing and joining others for briefing before heading into the Virunga forest for your gorilla trek. This trek can last for between 30 minutes to 7 hours depending on the location of mountain gorilla family you are allocated for trekking on that particular day. Once you find the gorillas, you will be allowed to spend one hour with them while observing their behavior, taking photographs and then after the one hour encounter with the gorillas you return to the Park Headquarters to end the trek. You will then transfer to Goma after the gorilla trek for overnight.

DAY 05: Departure to Kigali to End the tour

You will be driven back to Kigali for your post-tour accommodation or you may choose to fly out of Kigali on the last day of your tour. Since you will use the same route back, you will have another stop at the Rwanda-Congo border crossing for photo moments, buying souvenirs or to just relax before continuing to Kigali.
