Tour Details for the trip to Congo Brazzaville
Day 1: Brazzaville Mikhael Hotel or similar
You will be met at the Maya-Maya airport by your guide upon your arrival in Brazzaville. He will welcome and assist you as you go through formalities. Right after, you will be whisked away to your hotel. Depending on your time of arrival, you may either spend the evening relaxing from the long flight to Africa or embark on a PM sightseeing tour of Brazzaville.
Day 2: Brazzaville – Lesio-Luna – Brazzaville Mikhael Hotel or similar
Today we leave Brazzaville early in the morning and depart for the Lésio-Luna Gorilla sanctuary, a wildlife center ideally located in the middle of a lush forest and attainable after about 3h drive from Brazzaville. The road to this park is partially paved and most practicable during the dry season. Enjoy the scenic views as we pass through clusters of picturesque villages all located along the bank of the main road. Prevailing landscape along this itinerary is made up of rainforest full of gigantic trees, and some small patches of Savannah from time to time. The road is also decorated by streams and rivers, most of which are tributaries to the mighty Congo River.
Our visit to the park includes a visit to the island of the Western Lowland Gorillas, the young gorillas as well as a cozy cruise over the Blue Lake, a clear-crystal Lake that also house some hippos (if very lucky) among others.
The sanctuary used to boast a size of 30+ members split into families/quarters. The Lésio-Luna counts a total of 55 Gorillas that are on the guardianship of both the adjacent local community and the support of NGO’s and the Congolese government.
After the Gorilla safari, we freshen up, board our car and take the 2 – 3h scenic drive back to Brazzaville which we hope to attain in the evening.
Day 3: Brazzaville – Stanley Pool – Brazzaville Mikhael Hotel or similar
Our schedule of the day is overwhelmingly tight as we engage in a boat ride to the famous Stanley Pool in the morning and the exploration of the city of Brazzaville in the afternoon.
We leave the hotel and drive to Mami – Wata, the pier from which we board our boat and embark on a day exploration of the majestic Congo River. Highlights of this trip include stops on series of spectacular and exotic Islands including the M’bamou Island, the Faignond Island, the Falaise Du Douvre Island, the shoreside village of Manguenguengue, and of course the famous Malebo Pool.
Malebo Pool is a renown natural wonder. Formerly known as Stanley Pool in honour of the former English explorer and journalist Henry Morton Stanley, the Pool faces the fishing port of Yoro, an enclave in the presidential district of Mpila in Brazzaville. During dry season, the island offers a breath-taking view marked by thousands of surrounding sandbanks criss-crossed by a multitude of channels. With its predominantly fishermen and subsistence farmer population, the island receives more than 5,000 local migrants who periodically congregate here during the peak of the fishing campaigns when the river recedes. They settle here in cluster of various villages-fishing camps such as Mbamou, Talangaï, Mboulamountombo, Montouyangombé or Kitengué which we may visit, time permitting. From here, we sail upstream the river up to Faignond Island then later we sail further to the ‘Falaise Du Louvre’ and on our way back, briefly stop at the riverside village of Manguenguengue. We expect to reach Brazzaville by the early afternoon to engage in a Brazzaville city tour.
Day 4: Brazzaville – Pointe Noire Atlantic Palace Hotel or similar
This morning after breakfast, you will be transferred to the airport for an hour domestic flight to Pointe Noire. Upon arrival, you will be transferred to your hotel for checking. Through the slave’s road, we embark on the exploration of the Kouilou region in the early hours of the afternoon. Located about one hour from Pointe Noire, highlights in this kingdom includes the Diosso Gorges and the adjacent ethnographic museum among others. The gorges are stunning and consist of pink cliff of dramatic ridges that can attain 50 m high, all surrounded by a verdant forest full of bird.
The Museum is a collection of ancient objects and modern tools that represent the history of the Kingdom of Loango dating back from the slavery time to the contemporary days. It is located 10 min drive from the gorges and is surrounded by a verdant field of palm trees and a thick rainforest. From the museum, we head back to Pointe Noire and drive to the hotel for the night.
Day 5: Pointe Noire – Brazzaville – Return flight (or fly to Gabon if it is on Sunday)
In the morning we explore the coastal city of Pointe Noire, the economical capital and the second largest town of the country. Sightseeing tour of Pointe Noire includes a drive past the Grand Marché, the post office, the port, and the railway station. The Railway Station is a landmark of the construction of the Congo – Ocean Railway. Pointe Noire also harbour a new museum that we visit as well as the cathedral and the handicraft market, among others. In the afternoon, we head back to the hotel for check-out and later drive to the airport for the domestic flight to Brazzaville which we attain an hour later. Domestic flights between Pointe Noire and Brazzaville are operated by Canadian Airways Congo daily, with the last flights leaving Pointe Noire at around 4pm or so.
