Samburu National Reserve is one of the best places to see lions and wildlife in Kenya it is one of the lesser known parks in Kenya but nevertheless teeming with wildlife. Samburu National Reserve is located at the southern corner of Samburu district in the Rift Valley province of Kenya. It is bordered to the south by Uaso Nyiro River which separates it from the Buffalo Springs National Reserve.
What to see in Samburu National Reserve
Wildlife: The Park has rare northern specialist species such as Grevy’s zebra, Somali ostrich, reticulated giraffe and gerenuk and Beisa oryx (also referred to as the Samburu special five). The reserve is rich in game including all the big 5 animals, large herds of elephants, lions, leopard, cheetah, wild dogs and over 450 species of birds recorded.
Birds: The reserve has over 450 species of birds including five species categorized as vulnerable that is African darter, great egret, white headed vulture, martial eagle and the yellow billed ox-pecker. The critically endangered pancake tortoise (malacochersus tornieri) is also found here.
Activities: There are various activities that you can engage in and see while at the reserve. These include game drives for wildlife viewing, bird watching, sundowners, bush breakfast, nature walks, river rafting and the samburu cultural experience.
What is the best time for a safari in Samburu National Reserve?
Safari in Samburu National Reserve is done all year round and the best time is during dry season which starts in late May and goes on to early October, this time is good for safari wildlife given the fact it’s when large concentrations of wildlife are found in the reserve due to availability of lush vegetation along Esaso Nyiro river, the main source of water to the reserve and the nearby communities.

By road: The Reserve can be accessed by road from Nairobi through Isiolo on all weather bitumen while Isiolo Archer’s post is graveled. The road distance from Isiolo to Archer’s Gate is 35km.
