Detailed Seven Day Uganda Itinerary
Day One: Arrival in Entebbe and transfer to Kampala
Your journey begins at Entebbe International Airport where you arrive to a warm tropical breeze and the scent of Lake Victoria. After clearing immigration and collecting your luggage, your driver guide welcomes you and briefs you on the itinerary. The drive from Entebbe to Kampala takes about one to one and a half hours depending on traffic. It passes through busy market towns, roadside fruit stalls, and the lush suburbs surrounding the capital.
Check in at your hotel in Kampala and relax after your international flight. Depending on your arrival time, you can explore the city. This may include a visit to the Uganda Museum, a walking tour through the craft markets, or a short cultural performance at Ndere Centre. Most travelers also enjoy tasting local dishes such as the traditional matooke meal, fresh tilapia from Lake Victoria, or a natural fruit smoothie made with Ugandan mangoes and pineapples.
Day Two: Kampala to Kibale Forest with optional crater lake visit
After an early breakfast, depart for Kibale Forest National Park. The journey takes about five to six hours and introduces you to the rural scenery that defines western Uganda. Expect rolling hills covered in banana plantations, small farms with cattle grazing peacefully, and villages where children happily wave to passing visitors.
Arrive in Fort Portal town for lunch, then continue to your lodge near Kibale Forest. In the afternoon, you may choose an optional visit to one of the crater lakes. These bright blue lakes sit inside deep volcanic hollows surrounded by green slopes. You can take a guided walk around the lake, enjoy panoramic views of the Rwenzori Mountains, and observe unique birds such as the great blue turaco.
Settle into your lodge for dinner and rest ahead of chimpanzee tracking the next day.
Day Three: Chimpanzee tracking in Kibale Forest and transfer to Queen Elizabeth National Park
After a warm breakfast, report to the Kibale Forest visitor center for a briefing on chimpanzee tracking. Kibale Forest is home to one of the highest densities of chimpanzees in Africa, making encounters highly rewarding. The track takes between thirty minutes and two hours depending on the movement of the chimpanzee community. Once you locate them, you spend one full hour quietly watching them interact. You may observe individuals grooming each other, young ones swinging through branches, or dominant males patrolling the area.
After lunch, begin your scenic drive from Kibale to Queen Elizabeth National Park. The route passes through the Maramagambo Forest and the foothills of the Rwenzori Mountains. Arrive at your lodge in the evening, enjoy dinner, and prepare for the next day’s wildlife adventures.
Day Four: Morning game drive and afternoon boat safari on the Kazinga Channel
Start the day with a sunrise game drive on the Kasenyi plains. This open savanna area provides the best chance to see lions, Uganda kobs, elephants, buffaloes, and a wide range of antelopes. The morning light makes photography magical, especially when herds of kob gather near the tracks.
Return to the lodge for lunch and relaxation.
In the afternoon, take a boat safari along the Kazinga Channel. This natural waterway connects Lake Edward and Lake George and supports one of the highest concentrations of hippos in Africa. During the two hour cruise, you may see elephants cooling near the water, crocodiles sunbathing, buffaloes drinking, and countless water birds including pied kingfishers, African fish eagles, and yellow billed storks. This boat safari is one of the highlights of any trip to Uganda.
Day Five: Transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest with a stop in Ishasha
Depart Queen Elizabeth National Park and travel south toward the Ishasha sector, an area famous for its tree climbing lions. These lions often rest on large fig tree branches, especially during the warmer hours of the day. A short game drive gives you a chance to spot them along with topis, buffaloes, and elephants.
Continue the journey into the highlands. The scenery becomes increasingly dramatic with terraced hills, mist filled valleys, and villages perched on steep slopes. Arrive in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in the late afternoon, check in at your lodge, and rest. Bwindi is one of the most biologically diverse forests in Africa and home to roughly half of the worlds remaining mountain gorillas.
Day Six: Gorilla trekking in Bwindi and cultural encounter
Today is the climax of your Uganda trip. After an early breakfast, head to the park headquarters for a detailed briefing. You will be assigned a gorilla family based on your fitness level and interests. The trek may take anywhere from one to six hours depending on the location of the gorillas. Walking through the forest is an adventure in itself, with tall trees, tangled vines, colorful butterflies, and the distant calls of black and white colobus monkeys.
Once you find the gorilla family, you spend one hour observing them. Witnessing a giant silverback protectively watching over his group, or a mother feeding her infant, is one of the most emotional and extraordinary wildlife experiences in the world.
Return to the lodge for lunch followed by an optional community or cultural visit. Many visitors enjoy meeting local craft makers, traditional dancers, or the Batwa forest community where stories of ancient life in the forest are shared.
Day Seven: Drive to Kigali or return to Entebbe for departure
After breakfast, begin your journey out of Bwindi. Travelers who plan their flights out of Rwanda can drive to Kigali which takes about four to five hours depending on the sector of Bwindi. Travelers who fly out of Uganda can drive back to Entebbe, usually stopping overnight in Mbarara before completing the journey.
Your guide drops you at the airport marking the end of your remarkable seven day journey through the Pearl of Africa.
Best Time to Visit Uganda
Uganda is a year round destination. However, the most ideal time for this itinerary is during the drier seasons which occur from June to August and from December to February. During these months, forest trails are less slippery, gorilla and chimpanzee treks are easier, and game drives have better visibility. The wetter months bring greener landscapes and fewer crowds but trekking can be more physically demanding.
