Small Group Sizes

• Sustainable tours typically limit group sizes to minimize stress on gorillas and reduce environmental impact. Most parks regulate the number of visitors, usually allowing a maximum of 8 people per gorilla family visit.

Permits and Fees

• The cost of gorilla trekking permits (often expensive) is a significant part of conservation efforts. These fees contribute to funding protection programs, habitat restoration, and community development projects.

Ethical Interactions

• Trekkers must follow strict rules to protect gorillas from human disease and stress. These include keeping a safe distance, wearing masks, and limiting the time spent with the gorillas to one hour.

Community Involvement

• Sustainable tours work closely with local communities, offering them alternative livelihoods (guiding, portering, and hospitality). This reduces reliance on poaching or deforestation for income and fosters positive relationships between communities and conservation efforts.

Eco-Friendly Lodges

• Look for accommodations that use sustainable practices such as solar power, rainwater harvesting, and waste management systems. Many eco-lodges also employ locals and invest in community development.

Minimal Impact Travel

• Sustainable tours often encourage minimal impact practices such as “leave no trace” policies, using local guides, and avoiding the use of single-use plastics during the trip.
