Game drives/ Wildlife Viewing.
Doing game drives and wildlife viewing is one of the highlights of African safari experiences. Akagera National Park is once again home to the Big Five, following the reintroduction of seven lions in 2015 – which bred successfully and doubled in number within a year as well as 18 Eastern black rhinos in 2017. Other animals found in Akagera include Leopard, hyena and side-striped jackal make up the larger predators in the park. Notable plains game include elephant, buffalo, topi, zebra, waterbuck, roan antelope and eland. Other antelope are duiker, oribi, bohor reedbuck, klipspringer, bushbuck and impala. Birding
Akagera National Park is an important ornithological site with 525 bird species. The rare and elusive shoebill shares the papyrus with other rarities such as the exquisite papyrus gonolek and countless other water birds that inhabit the wetlands in large numbers. The range restricted Red-faced barbet is probably the most sought-after bird and should be easy to find around Akagera game Lodge and Muyumbu campsite. Other range restricted species and highlights include Northern Brown-throated Weaver; Papyrus Gonolek; White-Winged Swamp Warbler; Carruthers’s Cisticola, White-collared Oliveback, and Grey-crowned Cranes. The park is also home to good populations of raptors and large numbers of waterbirds. For those interested in Birding, Akagera is one of the best birding destinations in Rwanda.
