How Local Communities Benefit from Gorilla Trekking in Rwanda
Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge, located in the park’s southern section of Bwindi, provides superb accommodation and a base for gorilla trekking in Uganda. The multi-award-winning eco-lodge offers mid-range to luxury forest escapes offers multiple options for travelers, including private garden cottages, family villas, and luxury suites nestled on a forested ridge with bewildering views of the rural landscape.
The lodge offers walking safari adventures around the rural landscape to complement the gorilla trekking excursions. One of the favorites with many guests is the walk across Bwindi Impenetrable Forest from Nkuringo to Buhoma, a renewing nature hike with a local guide. Several other trails around the lodge take you through the paradise of pristine nature and local mountain communities in the sophisticated landscape. The guided walking safari is a must for adventure seekers and nature lovers.
The lodge is built out of local material, using locally sourced papyrus for ceiling and wooden floors with a touch of volcanic rock. We used corrugated iron sheets to support rainwater catchment, which is our primary water source. We operate ‘In Harmony with Nature’ and on ‘Carbon Neutral footprint, ‘working with clients to preserve the environment through our go–green endeavors. All clients are encouraged to come with water bottles to refill drinking water from our main dining area.
The lodge is located 300m from the Nkuringo Sector visitor’s reception; a 10-15-minute walk to the gorilla trekking briefing point. We are also 23 kilometers (14 minutes) from the Rushaga Sector briefing point, a 45-minute drive from the Lodge.
We have two lounge and dining spaces, Mylica Bar and Rafiki Lounge, with stunning views of our surroundings, the Virunga Volcanoes, and the Bwindi Forest – both serving homemade meals and freshly-baked bread and warmly furnished with fireplaces. The Upstairs lounge also has a fireplace, an in-house craft shop and the best views of the Virunga’s.
The garden cottages and villa rates are Full Board arrangements, including breakfast, lunch (packed lunch for those tracking Gorillas), and a 4-course dinner. We cater to special diets on request. All suites come on an all-inclusive arrangement with full-time butler service.
Activities that can be carried out at Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge.
1. Ivy River Trail (13 km, 4–6 hours)
This scenic trail winds through local communities, tea plantations, and patches of secondary forest before descending into the Ivy River valley. You’ll walk alongside villagers going about their daily routines, giving you a glimpse of rural Ugandan life. Along the way, the path offers a chance to spot primates like black-and-white colobus monkeys, butterflies, and a rich variety of birdlife. The gradual descent makes it a rewarding hike, though the return climb can be moderately challenging. It’s a perfect blend of cultural encounters and natural beauty.
2. Kashasha River Trail (17 km, 6–7 hours)
This longer trek provides one of the most immersive experiences around Nkuringo. It connects Nkuringo to Buhoma, crossing the deep Kashasha River valley. The trail moves through both cultivated lands and dense forest sections, where you may encounter forest elephants, duikers, and numerous bird species. Because it is longer and steeper than the Ivy River Trail, it is best for adventurous hikers with good stamina. The panoramic views of the Bwindi canopy from the ridges are breathtaking, especially when mist hangs over the forest.
3. Buniga Forest Trail (3 hours)
The Buniga Pocket Forest, managed by the Batwa community, is a small but biologically rich remnant of Bwindi’s ecosystem. A guided walk here reveals medicinal plants, birdlife, and towering trees in a relatively easy trail that doesn’t demand much physical exertion. The highlight is the cultural interpretation by Batwa guides, who share how their ancestors used the forest for food, medicine, and shelter. This is a short, accessible option for visitors wanting both nature and culture in one outing.
4. Suma Waterfall Trail (4–5 hours)
This moderate hike leads you through lush countryside, coffee and banana plantations, and pockets of montane forest before arriving at the beautiful Suma Waterfall. The sound of cascading water in the tranquil forest setting makes this trail especially rewarding for photographers and those seeking a peaceful escape. Along the way, you’ll likely meet local farmers and enjoy views of terraced hillsides, giving you a sense of how closely human life and nature coexist here.
5. Bird Watching
Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is a birder’s paradise, and the Nkuringo area is one of the richest birding hotspots. With an experienced bird guide, you can spot Albertine Rift endemics such as the Rwenzori turaco, black-billed turaco, Kivu ground thrush, and Grauer’s broadbill. Early morning and late afternoon walks around the lodge grounds or in the forest edges provide the best sightings. For passionate birders, this activity alone can fill multiple days with rewarding species lists.
6. Bwindi Buffer Zone Walk
This gentle walk explores the buffer zone that surrounds Bwindi, where conservation and community livelihoods intersect. You’ll pass through community farmlands, tea plantations, and reforested areas that act as a protective cushion for the national park. The walk is highly interpretive, focusing on conservation education—how locals benefit from eco-tourism, how conflicts with wildlife are managed, and how buffer zones protect gorilla habitats. It’s an insightful experience for anyone interested in the human side of conservation.
