Maiko National Park

Maiko National Park is a national park in the Democratic Republic of the Congo another park home to the Eastern Lowland Gorillas. It lies in one of the most remote jungle forest areas of the country and covers 10,885 km2 (4,203 sq mi). The park is divided into three sectors, straddling the states of Nord Kivu, Province Orientale and Maniema. Three of Congo’s spectacular endemic animals are found here that is the Eastern Lowland Gorillas (Grauer’s gorilla), the okapi, and the Congo peafowl. Maiko National Park is also home to other wildlife like the African forest elephant, leopards, eastern chimpanzee and the endemic aquatic genet.

The park is home to numerous endemic and rare species and almost certainly, many rare species yet to be documented. However, the presence of former rebels who have made their homes in the park, along with illegal mining and poaching means that many species are threatened with extinction. One example, a new gorilla subspecies first documented in a 2005 survey was not found and believed extinct in a 2010 survey.

The park is hard to be visited as compared to Virunga National Park, Kahuzi Biega National Park and Upemba national park. You can get to the park from Goma or Beni or Butembo, or from Okapi wildlife reserve as they are allocated in Congo.
