Step by Step Guide to a Gorilla Trekking Day in Nkuringo Sector

Rwanda Safari Gorilla Permits Timing
Is Gorilla Trekking in Ruhija Sector Difficult? Ruhija Sector is one of the four gorilla trekking sectors located in the southern part of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and is often considered a moderately challenging destination for gorilla trekking. However, whether the trek is difficult depends on an individual’s fitness level, age, and the location of the gorilla family assigned on the trekking day. Some visitors complete their trek within a few hours on relatively gentle terrain, while others may spend much longer navigating steep slopes and dense forest vegetation.
Is Gorilla Trekking in Ruhija Sector Difficult? The terrain in Ruhija is characterized by rolling hills, forested ridges, valleys, and elevations ranging between 2,000 and 2,600 meters above sea level. Trekkers should expect uneven ground, muddy trails during rainy periods, exposed tree roots, and occasional steep ascents or descents. The high altitude can make hiking more demanding, especially for those who are not accustomed to mountain environments.
Despite these challenges, Ruhija is generally regarded as less strenuous than some treks in the Nkuringo Sector, which is known for its steeper mountains and deeper valleys. Experienced guides and trackers accompany every group, setting a pace suitable for participants and providing assistance where necessary. Porters are also available to help carry backpacks and offer support on difficult sections of the trail.
For most visitors with a reasonable level of fitness, gorilla trekking in Ruhija is achievable and highly rewarding. Proper hiking boots, walking sticks, rain gear, and adequate preparation can significantly reduce the difficulty and make the experience more enjoyable. The opportunity to encounter endangered mountain gorillas in their natural habitat makes every step of the journey worthwhile.
How much is Gorilla Trekking in Ruhija
Uganda remains one of the best and most affordable destinations for mountain gorilla trekking in Africa. Gorilla trekking takes place in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, home to nearly half of the world’s remaining mountain gorilla population.
Effective from July 1, 2026, Uganda Wildlife Authority charges the following gorilla permit fees:
Gorilla Trekking Permits
Foreign Non-Residents: USD 800 per person per trek
Foreign Residents: USD 700 per person per trek
Rest of Africa Citizens: USD 500 per person per trek
East African Citizens: UGX 300,000 per person per trek
A gorilla trekking permit allows visitors to spend one unforgettable hour with a habituated mountain gorilla family under the guidance of experienced park rangers and trackers.
Uganda currently has more than 20 habituated gorilla families available for tourism across Bwindi and Mgahinga National Parks, providing over 160 permits for gorilla trekking every day.
Gorilla Habituation Experience
For visitors seeking a more immersive gorilla encounter, Uganda offers the unique Gorilla Habituation Experience exclusively in the Rushaga sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.
Effective from July 1, 2026, Gorilla Habituation permits cost:
Foreign Non-Residents: USD 1,800 per person
Foreign Residents: USD 1,600 per person
Rest of Africa Citizens: USD 1,000 per person
East African Citizens: UGX 750,000 per person
Unlike standard gorilla trekking where visitors spend one hour with the gorillas, the Gorilla Habituation Experience allows guests to spend up to four hours observing and learning about a semi-habituated gorilla family alongside researchers, conservationists, and trackers.
How to Secure Gorilla Permits
Gorilla permits are limited and often sell out several months in advance, especially during the peak travel seasons from June to September and December to February.
We strongly recommend reserving your gorilla permit at least three to six months before your intended travel date. For travelers planning to visit during peak season, booking six to twelve months in advance is highly advisable.
When you contact Eco Adventure Safaris with your preferred travel dates, our reservations team will immediately check permit availability and advise you on the best trekking sectors and available accommodation options.
Once availability has been confirmed, a permit reservation can be secured upon payment. After payment is received, we process the booking with Uganda Wildlife Authority and provide official booking confirmation for your records.
Why Early Booking is Important
Gorilla permits are issued on a first-come, first-served basis. Every habituated gorilla family can only be visited by a maximum of eight tourists per day. This strict regulation helps minimize stress on the gorillas while ensuring a high-quality visitor experience.
Early booking not only guarantees permit availability but also allows travelers to secure the best lodges in Ruhija and obtain better international flight options.
