Other Activities
The lodge also provides additional activities such as chimpanzee tracking in nearby Kyambura Gorge, photography safaris, and relaxation experiences within its serene environment. Whether one is seeking wildlife encounters, cultural exploration, or simply relaxation, Buffalo Safari Lodge offers a well-rounded and memorable safari adventure.
Chimpanzee Trekking in Kyambura Gorge
Kyambura Gorge, often called the “Valley of the Apes,” lies within the eastern edge of Queen Elizabeth National Park. The gorge is about 100 meters deep, with lush riverine forest cutting through an otherwise savannah landscape. It is home to a small but habituated population of around 20–25 chimpanzees.
The trekking experience here is unique because you descend into the dramatic gorge, following the river trail under a canopy of tall fig trees and vines. Treks are conducted twice a day—morning and afternoon—and usually last 2–3 hours, depending on the movement of the chimpanzees. Once found, you spend about an hour observing their behavior—feeding, grooming, and communicating.
Permits are affordable USD130 and the trek also exposes you to other wildlife such as black-and-white colobus monkeys, red-tailed monkeys, baboons, and rich birdlife. The gorge scenery itself makes this experience distinct from other chimpanzee trekking locations in Uganda.
Chimpanzee Trekking in Kalinzu Forest
Kalinzu Central Forest Reserve lies near Bushenyi, on the edge of Queen Elizabeth National Park, and is one of Uganda’s best places to see wild chimpanzees. The forest is rich in biodiversity, with over 300 chimpanzees, about 50 of which are habituated for tourism.
Treks here are longer compared to Kyambura, as the chimps move widely in the dense forest. The trek can take 3–4 hours, and once the chimps are located, visitors are allowed one full hour to observe and photograph them. Kalinzu offers a higher success rate of finding chimpanzees than Kyambura, and the forest itself is home to many other primates, butterflies, and birds.
Permit fees are also quite affordable USD130 making Kalinzu a budget-friendly but rewarding chimpanzee trekking option. The forest’s remoteness and biodiversity give it a wild, off-the-beaten-path feel compared to busier trekking sites like Kibale.
