Lake Mutanda is located in Kisoro District in southwestern Uganda, approximately 20 kilometers north of the town of Kisoro, where the district headquarters are located. Lake Mutanda is nestled in the foothills of the Virunga Mountain Range, at an altitude of 1,800 meters (5,900 ft). The three volcanoes within the range, that are partly located in Uganda, namely: Mountain Muhabura, Mountain Sabinyo and Mountain Gahinga, can be viewed from Lake Mutanda. There are several islands on the lake. The lake is drained by the Rutshuru River, which flows northward to Lake Edward. Spending your time here as newlyweds is rewarding and breathtaking.

Volcano Hike in Mgahinga National Park
For those interested in Hiking, Lake Mutanda is close to the Gahinga Ranges namely; Mountain Sabyinyo, Mountain Gahinga and Mountain Muhabura and you can make a choice of climbing one of the mountains depending on your fitness. Mountain Sabinyo is at 3,669m and takes about eight hours to cover the round trip, following a steep ridge up to the peak, Mountain Gahinga which is the smallest with 3474m takes around six hours to ascend and descend, topped by a swamp-filled crater and giant lobelia. Mountain Muhavura is the highest peak at 4,127m, and this 12km round trip takes around eight hours. Once at the top, hikers are rewarded on a clear day with views of the Virunga Volcanoes, Lake Edward, Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and the peaks of the Rwenzori Mountain .Volcano Hiking experience gives you an opportunity to see different tree species, spot birds, Forest Elephants, Primates and Gorillas if you are lucky enough in Mgahinga National Park.
Golden Monkey tracking in Mgahinga National Park
Golden Monkey tracking is also a must do activity that can be done in the environs of Lake Mutanda while on your trip. Golden Monkeys are also rare primates in the world and Uganda is lucky to have them remaining in Mgahinga national park. Golden monkey tracking is one of the primary activities in the park that make Mgahinga gorilla national park a distinct destination. There are two communities of golden monkeys habituated for trekking, golden monkey trekking permit costs USD100 as per the Uganda wildlife Authority Tariff. The trek starts early morning at 7:00am with briefing at the park headquarters about the dos and don’ts while in the forest. Later you start your walk into the forest with park guides and Rangers until you find the golden Monkeys and you are allowed to view them for one hour. How to get to Lake Mutanda
By Road: You can opt for a road trip from Kampala/Entebbe which is approximately 9-10 hours into Kisoro district. The Lake is a 45-minute scenic drive from Kisoro town, you will be able to see a lot on the way, the beautiful landscape, the Equator, people and shops. You can also access the Resort from Kigali via Cyanika Boarder between Uganda and Rwanda as it is even a short drive of about 5-6 hours and also you have a lot to see on the road.
By Flight: You can also opt to fly into Kisoro Airstrip from Entebbe international Airport/Kajjansi, the airstrip is very close to the resorts/hotels close to the Lake. There are has daily domestic flights by domestic Airline companies with morning and afternoon schedules.
