October 25, 2022This 8 Days climbing Mountain Rwenzori takes you to climb Rwenzori Mountains, the largest in Africa (120km long /65Km wide) with an altitude range of 1600m to 5109m above Sea Level, making it the highest mountain in Uganda and third in Africa, Rwenzori Mountains are located in Rwenzori Mountains National Park and this is tagged as “The Mystical Challenge” Africa’s highest mountain range, the 5,109m Rwenzori or mountains of the moon is the snowy source of the Nile referred to by early geographers.
Rwenzori Mountains National Park is located in the western Uganda; it lies along the Uganda-Congo boarder protecting the highest parts of Rwenzori of 120km long and 65km wide. The national park is home to 70 mammals and 217 bird species including the 19 Albertine Rift endemic species. Apart from hiking mountain Rwenzori there is much more attractions to see and activities to do including the Bakonzo village walks, bird watching, sightseeing, nature walks where you will experience the local culture and day to day life of the Bakonzo.
Detailed itinerary for 8 Days climbing Mountain Rwenzori
Day 1. At Trekkers Hostel Kilembe the base camp at 1,450 meters. Have briefing from the guides and start the trek to sleep at Sine Camp 2596 meters following a height gain of 1146 meters. 9.5km, approximately 5 to 6 hours of walking.
Day 2. Hike to Mutinda camp at 3588 meters, giving you a height gain of 992 metres. in the afternoon at Mutinda one may wish to climb up Mutinda look out at 3975 metres of which apart from offering breathtaking views it also gives you good acclimatization since you would be continuing higher to the summit at 5109m. 6.1km, approximately 6 to 7 hrs of walking.
Day 3. Hike to Bugata camp at 4100 meters, with a height gain of 512 meters through the valley of amazingly unique beautiful plant species, streams and waterfalls while we head to Bugata camp at 4100 meters. the trek gets tougher and exhausting with the steep ridges, mud and boggy sections, high steps but the rewards are enormously beautiful. 8.6km is approximately 4 to 6hours of walking.
Day 4. Hike to Hunwick’s camp at 3974 meters, via Bamwanjara pass at 4450meters (giving altitude of 350meters having excellent views of the main peaks whilst the trek then losing altitude of 476 meters as you sleep at Hunwick’s camp. 8.3km, approximately 6 to 10hrs of walking.
Day 5. Hike to Margherita camp at 4485 meters, passing down and across the valley floor to Lake Kitandara which is very stunning with deep water and beautiful vegetation, climbing through Scoot Elliot pass to Margherita camp.5.1km, approximately 3 to 5 hrs.
Day 6. Wake up at 2:00am and have an early breakfast and setoff to climb Mt Stanley going through its glaciers to the summit of Margherita peak at 5109metres following a flight gain of 624m 3.8km, approximately 5 to 7 hours to the top, then 8.9km descent descend down to Hunwicks camp at 3974 meters for the night approximately 4 to 6hours.
Day 7. Descend down to Kiharo camp at 3430 meters via Oliver’s pass 4,505meters. Overnight at Kiharo camp set in a deep valley with high cliffs and dense vegetation 15.8km, approximately 7 to 10hrs of walking
Day 8. Descend downhill past the moss-covered rocks along rivers and beautiful forests back to the basecamp in Kilembe,14.6km 7 to 9hrs of walking Debrief and refresh and continue to your hotel for the night.
Cost of the 8 Days climbing Mountain Rwenzori
1 to 2 people – $1760 hiking fees + $35 per night park entrance fees (paid separately at the gates of the national park) per person
3 people and more – $1680 hiking fees + $35 per night park entrance fees (paid separately at the gates of the national park), per person
The hiking fees are inclusive: Guides, Porters, Meals , Accommodation during the trek and Summiting equipment
Exclusive of: Accommodation before and after the trek, Transport to and from the starting point, Insurance, Tips.
For all treks summiting Margherita peak, we will provide the following gear
8 Days climbing Mountain Rwenzori. Hiking gear includes Harnesses, caribinas, ice axes, helmets, rubber boots (are a must have), ropes and ice screws as part of the hiking package. The rest of the equipment must be carried by all hikers as we have not much for hire. Please carry your own pair of crampons if possible or you can rent from us at $20 a pair
Trekking with us the 8 Days climbing Mountain Rwenzori
We have a number of Trained supportive guides who are happy to lead you to the summit, with lots of experience in high and Low altitude summits, flora and fauna, first aid, abseiling, cooking, customer care and lots of stories to tell about the mountains since most of our guides come from the Rwenzori Regions. Their training never stops and it is usually done every year during the low season months of April, May and November since they keep updating as the mountains keep changing all the time, mostly for peak guides.
Our treks come with Porters who will be carrying your luggage during the hike and the maximum weight is 23kg per bag, we advise that you carry a big backpack which the porters will be carrying and a day pack for your personal equipment which you carry yourself. Backpack covers are a must have as Rwenzoris are always wet even in the dry seasons, please endeavor to invest in a good backpack cover to avoid wet equipment during the trek, or else use polythene bags inside the backpack to protect your gear.
All meals are provided during our treks and we pride ourselves to providing good meals which are prepared by our trained guides. Our meals are designed to keep you healthy and safe during your trek and we do cater for all meal allergies. Please let us know all your meal allergies when booking your treks for a better organization. We do advise one to carry favorite snacks as they’re a good motivator during your trek.
All accommodation during the trek is in huts with bunk beds dormitory style and mattresses unfortunately we cant provide twins or singles for during the hike as the conditions are tough to build huts and we have a policy of conserving the mountain environment hence less destruction of nature, but we endeavor to provide as much comfortable accommodation as we can. All you need is a warm four seasons and you will be covered up for the night.
The top huts have wood stoves inside to make a cosy environment, and solar power. Hunwick’s and Kiharo camps even have solar with an inverter so you have 240v to charge your phone and cameras.
The lower huts too have solar power with an inverter so you can recharge your batteries, that is Kiharo Camp and Samalira camp.
Insurance is mandatory for all our treks and all clients should buy their insurance before arrival covering Medivac and evacuation at an altitude of 4000 meters and above. We as well advise one to carry insect repellent. Please note that no trek will depart without insurance.
